January 2025- Plans for 2025

 Happy New Year everyone!

Time to update everybody on what we finished in the last two months of 2024. Chris and Peter built a brand new 8x8 shed out of wood from scratch and we repaired the basement entrance to make it more watertight and protect the foundations of the house. This meant that we got the last of the sea cans off our property. Last but not least we are steps closer to finishing the kitchen and hope to have it done by the end of January. Dishwasher is installed and ready to be hooked up as well as the new all in one washer and dryer. Stove and fan work great ( Christmas cookies were baked) and we are picking up the shelves for the uppers tomorrow! And I got a new composter outside. So we got a huge amount accomplished in a very short amount of time.

I will paint it in the spring the same colour as the house. Chris has put a new hasp lock on it since this picture has been taken. I will take another picture of it in the spring when it is all gussied up!


This month, we are looking at what are plan of action is for 2025. We're trying to decide which room to renovate next as most of the structural work has been done except redoing the porch and redoing the fascia, which can only be done in warmer months. The problem is that my husband has severe chemical allergies he developed overseas when deployed with the UN, so even the mildest paints can lead to him developing a sinus infection. Since I have to remove all of the old wallpaper anyways so I might end up re-wallpapering everything where I really wanted to paint. I am okay with this it's just finding the right wallpaper, steaming off the old, repairing the wall and putting wallpaper back up again. I have to do it anyway so am coming to terms with not painting. Wallpaper can be a slow and tedious job, plus I find wallpaper a lot more personal than paint for some reason.

The blue room off the kitchen. Looks like paint right? No. It is paint over wallpaper. There are at least two rooms where they have painted over wallpaper. So do we turn this into a bedroom? A family room? Still trying to decide. 

The other job I want to do is to inventory all of our storage buckets and hopefully putting on QR codes onto the buckets so we know what the contents are. We find that as we renovate room to room we are often opening buckets, repacking them, moving them into new space as we repair a room to receive the stuff in the buckets. Creating an online data base sounds boring but will save us time I think.

2 Years and two months-Where we are and what we've done

  It's almost 2 months since I should have written this post but as usual life has been busy and there have been lots of changes. We bought this house 2 years ago in October 2023. And I'd love to say everything in the second year went right but it didn't because it never does. What's interesting is work that we did two years ago has either stood the test of time or it hasn't which is extremely frustrating when you are on a budget and want to finish up the renovations. The biggest blow was that at the end of September when Chris was finishing the steps down to the basement from the exterior entrance he was checked the beams supporting the house. We had noticed that some cracks had begun to appear in plaster walls that we had already prepped and painted and some floors had become spongy again. Unfortunately, it looks like when they jacked the house and put in the new support beams they hadn't put in strong enough beams. We really needed 8x8 posts instead of the 6x...

Structural Repairs update

  The space between the first and second floor. So, my last post I talked about the need for a structural engineer and we've had him over. To say the information was not good is putting it mildly. When we had the repair done initially it was in the second month that we lived here. We had our structural engineer out the day after we bought the home. And he said yes your house needs new supports underneath. He gave us a plan; he told us the required building materials we needed and so we got a building permit (thank goodness.) He said we could do this work ourselves, but we didn't think so. It was early days into the renovation of this home, and we were just so overwhelmed by the extent of the neglect in this house. And how inaccurate our home inspection was (in Canada you are not allowed to sue your home inspector). Our neighbour recommended a firm to us that they had used to shore up their barn.
